The health benefits of ginger

A culinary spice and medicinal marvel, Jo Lewin gives the nutritional low-down on this versatile seasoning.
The Zingiberaceae botanical family to which ginger belongs includes three spices: turmeric, cardamom and ginger. From ancient India and China to Greece and Rome, the rhizome (root) of ginger has been revered as a culinary and medicinal spice. Gingerbread, ginger beer and preserved ginger are all familiar products. But ginger is more than a seasoning - its medicinal properties have been valued and used throughout the ages.

Identifying ginger...

The ginger plant is a creeping perennial with thick, tuberous underground stems and an ability to grow up to one metre in height. Cultivated mainly in tropical countries, Jamaican ginger (which is paler) is regarded as the best variety for culinary use. According to Chinese tradition, dried ginger tends to be hotter than fresh.

Origins...

Native to southeastern Asia, India and China, ginger has been an integral component of the diet and valued for its aromatic, culinary and medicinal properties for thousands of years. The Romans first imported ginger from China and by the middle of the 16th century, Europe was receiving more than 2000 tonnes per year from the East Indies. The top commercial producers of ginger now include Jamaica, India, Fiji, Indonesia and Australia.

Ginger is available in various forms:

  • Whole fresh roots. These provide the freshest taste.
  • Dried roots.
  • Powdered ginger. This is ground made from the dried root- Preserved or 'stem' ginger. Fresh young roots are peeled, sliced and cooked in heavy sugar syrup.
  • Crystallised ginger. This is also cooked in sugar syrup, air dried and rolled in sugar.
  • Pickled ginger. The root is sliced paper thin and pickled in vinegar. This pickle, known in Japan as gari, often accompanies sushi to refresh the palate between courses.

The benefits of ginger tea

Ginger tea is great to drink when you feel a cold coming on. It is a diaphoretic tea, meaning that it will warm you from the inside and promote perspiration. It is also good when you don't have a cold and just want to warm up!
To make ginger tea (for nausea)...
Steep 20-40g of fresh, sliced ginger in a cup of hot water. Add a slice of lemon or a drop of honey if you fancy.

The origin of ginger ale...

In English pubs and taverns in the 19th century, bartenders put out small containers of ground ginger for people to sprinkle into their beer. And it was the ancient Greeks who prized ginger so highly that they mixed it into their bread, creating the first gingerbread.

Research

The many curative properties of ginger are widely researched. Used on the skin it can stimulate the circulation and soothe burns. As a diaphoretic it encourages perspiration, so it can be used in feverish conditions such as influenza or colds. The root, which is the part of the plant most widely used in alternative forms of medicine, is rich in volatile oils. It is these oils that contain the active component gingerol.
Soothes digestive system...
Historically, ginger has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating discomfort and pain in the stomach. Ginger is regarded as an excellent carminative, a substance that promotes the elimination of excessive gas from the digestive system and soothes the intestinal tract. Colic, and dyspepsia , respond particularly well to ginger.
Nausea...
Gingerroot appears to reduce the symptoms associated with motion sickness including dizziness, nausea, vomiting and cold sweating. Ginger has also been used to treat the nausea and vomiting associated with mild symptoms of pregnancy sickness.
digestive systemGingerols...
Ginger also contains very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols. These substances are believed to explain why so many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis experience reductions in their pain levels and improvements in their mobility when they consume ginger regularly. Gingerols inhibit the formation of inflammatory cytokines; chemical messengers of the immune system.

How to select and store

Fresh ginger can be purchased in most supermarkets. Mature ginger has a tough skin that requires peeling. Fresh ginger can be stored in the fridge for up to three weeks if it is left unpeeled. Whenever possible, choose fresh ginger over dried since it is superior in flavour and contains higher levels of the active component gingerol. The root should be fresh looking, firm, smooth and free of mould with no signs of decay or wrinkled skin. If choosing dry ginger, keep it in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dark dry place for no more than six months.

Safety

Ginger is very safe for a broad range of complaints, whether it is taken in a concentrated capsule form, eaten fresh or sipped as a tea or ginger ale. Ginger contains moderate amounts of oxalate. Individuals with a history of oxalate-containing kidney stones should avoid overconsuming ginger. If you're unsure or concerned whether it is safe for you to consume ginger always consult your doctor.

5 Players who have tormented Barcelona the most

After Angel di Maria's evisceration of Barcelona in the Champions League, we take a look at La Blaugrana's worst tormentors

Barcelona trotted up to Les Parc des Princes full of verve and confidence after their fabled trio of MSN (Messi, Suarez, Neymar) had pulled them back into the league title race and put them into the Copa del Rey final with some emphatic displays of attacking football. But apparently, that was just papering over the cracks. What happened in Paris was not a pretty sight for any fan of the Blaugrana
They limped their way back to Catalonia after being hammered to smithereens by a resurgent Paris Saint-Germain who were led by the irresistible Angel di Maria. Having never given the Catalans a moment’s peace when he used to ply his trade with Real Madrid, he continued in a similar vein for Les Parisiens – and with a brace took his goals against Barcelona tally to 4.
Drawing inspiration from this, we look back at the 5 players who have tormented Barcelona the most – as you would expect it’s dominated by players from their fierce Castilian rivals, Real Madrid.

5. Rafael Marañón  (Espanyol) – 9 goals

Espanyol may not have many happy memories of playing their richer, vastly more successful cross-town neighbours Barcelona but in the mid-70’s ace striker Rafa Marañón did give them something to smile about.
He scored 111 goals in all competitions for the lesser known Catalans (a record he held until Raul Tamudo broke it in 2007), 9 of which came against their illustrious counterparts in blue and red.

4. Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid, and memorably once for Chelsea) – 11 goals

The man they call El Nino loves playing against Barcelona. Starting off with a glorious solo goal on the 1st of February, 2003 he has scored 11 goals against La Blaugrana – his last coming in the UEFA Champions League on the 5th of April, 2016.
And he’s done this regardless of form. Even when he could barely hit a barn door while at Chelsea, he stabbed them to death with a brilliant breakaway goal that was taken with a flamboyance that harked back to the glory days of old. He even marked his return to Atletico by scoring a sumptuous goal in a crucial 3-2 win.
Considering the form he is in, don’t think Barca will fancy their last trip to the Vicente Calderon come the 26th of February.

3. Raúl  Gonzalez Blanco (Real Madrid) – 15 goals

There were few teams the Prince of Madrid liked scoring against more than Barcelona. From his first season in the famous all-white that he made his own (1994), till his penultimate season (2009) Raúl banged in goal after goal against the arch rivals – and more often than not he ended up on the winning side.
An arch predator, his 15 goals against Barca are like a mini-CV of his greatest attributes – unmatched poaching abilities, underrated pace, great heading and a ruthlessness in front of goal that has made him a legend in Spain’s capital and one of the greatest left feet the game has ever seen.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) – 16 goals

When will the myth that Cristiano Ronaldo does not turn up for the big games die down? The man has done everything, against everyone - and 16 goals against his arch nemesis Leo Messi and co. are just a statistical testament to the ruthless goal scoring ability of the Portuguese. He has scored all manner of goals against Barca including some trademark power headers, pacey individual goals and goals that just plain embarrassed the opposition.

1. Alfredo di Stefano (Real Madrid) – 18 goals

The great Argentine has always been a pain in the side of Barcelona. Initially brought over to Spain by Barcelona, and then ordered by FIFA to spend a season each for Barca and Real Madrid, La Blaugrana had disgustedly given up the case and let Madrid take him.
5 Champions League titles, 8 League titles, 5 Pichichi trophies, 2 Balon d'Or and 18 goals against them would definitely not have helped Barca ease their pain of the transfer saga.
He was a prolific striker who tormented Barcelona throughout his distinguished playing career.
Di Stefano’s goal comes up around the fag end of the video – but the vintage football makes for some wonderful viewing.

Twitter Explodes as Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first Manchester United hattrick guides them to 3-0 win over St. Etienne

Zlatan Ibrahimovic stole the show as the Pogba brothers went head to head and the younger one came up on top. Rather easily.

Manchester United registered a comprehensive win, one that well deserved after that brilliant second half performance – after Lingard came on for Fellaini.
And although Saint-Etienne made a fist of it, their old foe Zlatan Ibrahimovic had one of those nights where everything he touched turned to 'goal' (pardon the pun)
